- Rafters - the sloping timbers which support the roof of a building.
- Redemption fee - a fee often payable when you payoff a mortgage early.
- Reinforced Concrete - the name given to concrete which has been strengthened with wire or metal bars.
- Remortgage - when a second mortgage is taken out against the capital held in a house.
- Rendering - the first application of a mix such as plaster onto a brick wall.
- Retaining Wall - a barrier wall which resists lateral pressure and prevents the movement of earth.
- Renovation - improving a sub-standard or unsuitable property by performing work on it.
- Repayment mortgage - a mortgage where the loan repayments cover both the loan and the interest throughout the, period of the loan. This means that at the end of the loan period all the money borrowed and interest due have been paid and you fully own the house.
- Resident landlord - someone who lives in the same premises as his tenant.
- RIBA - the Royal Institute of British Architects.
- RICS - Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
- R.S.J. - a rolled steel joist.
- Rising damp - capillary action causes damp to rise up a wall of a house resulting in wood rot and plaster decay. Normally requires a damp course to be fitted.
